Frequently Asked Questions When Hiring a Campervan

Planning your Western Australian road trip? We’ve answered the most common questions travellers ask before hiring a campervan with Home on the Road, including deposits, insurance, kilometres, pick-up, drop-off, licence requirements and what’s included for your journey.

Booking and payments

Our regular minimum rental period is 4 days.

During peak travel periods, the minimum rental period may be longer depending on demand and availability. If you have specific dates in mind, we recommend checking availability early so you have the best chance of securing the campervan that suits your trip.

A 30% booking deposit is required to confirm your campervan hire.

This secures your dates and allows us to hold the vehicle for your road trip. The remaining balance is due before your hire begins, as outlined during the booking process.

Yes. The 30% booking deposit is refundable up until 72 hours before your scheduled pick-up time.

This gives you more peace of mind when planning your trip, especially if your travel plans are still coming together. Cancellations made within 72 hours of pick-up may not be eligible for a refund.

If you cancel more than 72 hours before your scheduled pick-up time, your 30% booking deposit is refundable.

If you cancel within 72 hours of pick-up, your booking may no longer be eligible for a deposit refund. If something changes, please get in touch with us as early as possible so we can help where we can.

You can change your booking dates up to two months before your trip at no additional cost, subject to campervan availability.

If you need to change your dates closer to your booking, please contact us as soon as possible. We will always do our best to help, but changes may depend on availability and the timing of your request.

We accept credit card payments only.

A 1% credit card surcharge applies.

Kilometres and travel distance

For rentals under 7 days, 200km per day is included free of charge.

Any extra kilometres are charged at $0.25 per kilometre.

For rentals of 7 days or more, unlimited kilometres are included, giving you the freedom to roam further without watching the odometer.

For rentals under 7 days, any kilometres above your included 200km per day are charged at $0.25 per extra kilometre.

If you are planning a bigger trip, booking for 7 days or more may be better value because unlimited kilometres are included.

Yes. Unlimited kilometres are included free for campervan rentals of 7 days or more.

This is ideal if you are planning a longer WA road trip, such as Perth to Exmouth, Karijini, Broome, Esperance, Margaret River or the South West.

Pick-up, drop-off and location

Campervan pick-up is from our Welshpool location at 3/229 Bank Street, Welshpool, WA.

This location gives you easy access to Perth Airport, major roads and the start of your WA road trip.

In-person pick-up is available Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Contactless pick-up is available outside these hours from Monday to Saturday, and early morning pick-up can be requested at least 3 days before your rental, subject to availability.

Drop-off is flexible, contactless and available after hours, including Sundays.

Yes. One-way rental is available from Perth to Broome.

An additional fee applies for this service. However, you may be able to get a refund of the one-way fee if you find another traveller who books the van and drives it back to Perth.

We are located in Welshpool, around 10 – 15 minute from Perth Airport.

This makes pick-up convenient for interstate and international travellers arriving in Perth before heading off on their campervan adventure.

Yes. Drop-off is flexible and can be done after hours.

This makes it easier to return your campervan around your travel schedule, especially if you are arriving back in Perth later in the day.

Driving requirements

Yes. The minimum age to hire and drive one of our campervans is 21 years old.

Yes. International travellers can hire a campervan from Home on the Road, as long as they meet our licence, age and driving experience requirements.

If your licence is not in English, you may need an International Driving Permit or an official translation. It is best to organise this before arriving in Australia so your pick-up runs smoothly.

You need to have held your licence for at least 12 months and have at least 12 months of driving experience to rent and drive one of our campervans.

No. We do not charge extra for additional drivers.

This means you can share the drive, take proper breaks and enjoy the journey together.

Insurance, bond and roadside support

We offer three insurance options:

The Gambler: $0/day with a $3,500 security and excess deposit.

On the Fence: $22/day with a $1,750 security and excess deposit. Tyre cover is included.

Sure Thing: $35/day with a $750 security and excess deposit. Windscreen and tyre cover are included.

Optional windscreen and tyre damage cover may also be available for $5/day each, depending on your selected insurance option.

Yes. Roadside assistance is included with your campervan hire.

Our Toyota Hiace campervans are maintained for reliability, but roadside assistance gives you added peace of mind while you explore Western Australia.

Your security deposit and excess depend on the insurance option you choose.

The lower-cost insurance option has a higher excess, while the higher daily insurance option reduces your security and excess deposit. This lets you choose the level of cover that best suits your budget and comfort level.

Campervan inclusions and add-ons

Our campervans include the essentials you need for a comfortable WA road trip, including sleeping areas, cooking equipment, camping gear, safety equipment and roadside assistance.

Exact inclusions vary depending on the campervan you choose, so we recommend checking the vehicle page before booking:

Each campervan is thoughtfully set up to make life on the road easier, whether you’re heading down south, up the coast, or into the heart of WA.

Bedding is available as an optional add-on.

You can add bedding to your booking if you would prefer to travel lighter and have the essentials ready when you collect your campervan.

You should return the campervan in a clean and tidy condition.

If you choose the pre-paid cleaning add-on, we will take care of the general cleaning for you. You will still need to wash your dishes and empty the esky before returning the van.

Yes. Cooking equipment is included with your campervan hire.

Our campervans are set up to make simple road trip meals easy, with practical kitchen gear so you can cook at campsites, rest stops and scenic overnight spots along the way.

Optional extras may include bedding, an inverter, external table and chairs, a light and fan, snorkel sets and pre-paid cleaning.

You can also choose our Bloody Good Package, which bundles several popular extras into one simple add-on.

Road trips and travel areas

Our campervans can be taken on some unsealed 2WD roads, but extra charges apply.

Unsealed 2WD roads are charged at $5/day. This helps cover the extra maintenance required after travelling on rougher roads.

Perth is the perfect starting point for exploring Western Australia by campervan.

Popular road trip routes include:

Whether you are chasing beaches, national parks, outback roads or quiet camping spots, a campervan gives you the freedom to move at your own pace.

Yes. You can take the campervan to Karijini National Park, but a one-time Karijini fee applies.

The current Karijini fee is $150. This helps cover the additional maintenance required after travelling through more rugged areas.
