Perth to Broome Road Trip: 14-Day Campervan Itinerary

Summarise or share with:

A Perth to Broome road trip is around 2,200 kilometres by the most direct sealed route, but a campervan trip through Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Ningaloo Reef, Cape Range and Karijini National Park covers much more ground. Allow around 4,000 to 5,000 kilometres for these 14- and 15-day itineraries once local sightseeing, campground access and detours are included.

Fourteen days gives you time for the main coastal highlights and two full days in Karijini, although it includes some long driving days. We recommend allowing 15 days if possible, with an overnight stop in Port Hedland to break up the long drive north from Karijini. Three weeks is ideal if you want more time around Ningaloo, Karijini and Broome.

Travelling by campervan suits a road trip from Perth to Broome particularly well. You can carry your food, water, cooking setup and sleeping space with you as the distances grow and towns become smaller. If you want to finish the rental in Broome rather than returning to Perth, confirm one-way availability with Home On The Road before booking the rest of your trip.

Quick Summary

  • Allow at least 14 days, but preferably 15 for a Perth to Broome road trip covering Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Ningaloo and two full days in Karijini. The extra day breaks up the long drive from Karijini to Eighty Mile Beach.
  • Budget around 4,000 to 5,000 km in total, including sightseeing and local driving.
  • Main route: Perth, Geraldton, Kalbarri, Denham, Coral Bay, Exmouth, Karijini, Port Hedland (supply stop or overnight), Eighty Mile Beach and Broome.
  • May to September is the best overall period for the full route.
  • The main route can be driven in a 2WD campervan, but some side roads and campground access roads are unsealed.
  • In the 14-day version, allow for two particularly long drives: Exmouth to Karijini and Karijini to Eighty Mile Beach via Port Hedland.
  • Book Ningaloo, Karijini and Broome accommodation early during the dry season.
  • Check Main Roads WA, park alerts and weather conditions before every long regional driving day.

Distances are approximate. The inter-town distances do not include all driving to beaches, gorges, lookouts, shops and campgrounds. Your actual total can reach 4,000 to 5,000 km, depending on the side trips you choose.

How Many Kilometres Should You Budget?

The 3,300 km figure is only a guide to the main transfers between overnight stops. It leaves out plenty of real-world driving: Kalbarri’s inland gorges, Denham to Monkey Mia, the return trip from Exmouth into Cape Range National Park, and the roads between Karijini’s widely spaced attractions.

For example, the Kalbarri Skywalk is around 37 km from town, adding roughly 74 km for the return trip. Turquoise Bay is around 60 km from Exmouth, or roughly 120 km return. Those two outings alone add almost 200 km, before visiting other attractions.

For planning your campervan kilometre allowance and fuel budget, use 4,000 km as a starting estimate and allow up to around 5,000 km if you expect extra beach stops, campground detours and sightseeing. Check your own mapped route, as local driving varies considerably with where you stay and what you visit.

How Many Days Do You Need for Perth to Broome?

10-12 days

Too rushed for this route

Long driving days and major compromises

14 days

Minimum for the complete route

Two full Karijini days, but long Pilbara drives

15 days

Better-paced option

Break the Karijini-to-coast drive at Port Hedland

16-21 days

Best if time allows

More time for reef, hiking and rest days

If you only have 10 to 12 days, remove a major detour rather than rushing this full route. Fourteen days is achievable if you are comfortable with long driving days. We recommend the 15-day trip for most travellers because it breaks up the drive from Karijini to Eighty Mile Beach without losing time in the national park.

The full 15-day alternative, including the changed overnight stops and driving distances, follows the 14-day itinerary below.

Some people think they can do Perth to Broome in a week, without realising how easily they could cover 5,000 kilometres. I’d recommend two weeks as an absolute minimum, but three weeks is ideal if you want to enjoy the places along the way instead of driving all the time.

14-Day Perth to Broome Road Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Perth to Geraldton

Around 420 km

Leave Perth early and head north along Indian Ocean Drive. Lancelin, Cervantes and Jurien Bay all make easy breaks, but choose one or two rather than trying to stop everywhere.

Use Geraldton as your first major supply stop for groceries, drinking water and fuel. If you arrive with enough daylight, walk the foreshore or visit the HMAS Sydney II Memorial.

Campervan tip: Do a proper food shop here. Larger supermarkets become less frequent as you continue north.

Day 2: Geraldton to Kalbarri

Around 155 km

The short drive leaves most of the day for Kalbarri. Explore two or three coastal lookouts on the southern approach, such as Natural Bridge, Island Rock and Red Bluff, then finish near the Murchison River.

Our Perth to Kalbarri road trip itinerary covers the smaller coastal stops and longer walks in more detail.

Campervan tip: Doing the cliffs today leaves tomorrow free for the inland national park.

Day 3: Kalbarri National Park

Local driving: allow extra kilometres for inland lookouts and coastal stops

Start early and head inland for Nature’s Window and the Kalbarri Skywalk.

Fit travellers visiting in cooler conditions can make the nine-kilometre Loop Trail the main activity. Do not treat it as a quick add-on. Carry plenty of water and check current DBCA advice, forecasts and trail conditions before setting out.

Campervan tip: Prepare breakfast, walking gear and water the night before so you can reach the park early.

Day 4: Kalbarri to Denham

Around 375 km

Drive north towards Shark Bay and stop at Shell Beach before continuing to Denham.

Once you arrive, keep the afternoon easy. Walk the waterfront, organise supplies and settle in for two nights rather than trying to fit Monkey Mia into the same day.

For a slower version, see our Perth to Monkey Mia road trip itinerary.

Day 5: Shark Bay and Monkey Mia

Local driving: Denham to Monkey Mia and other Shark Bay stops

Visit Monkey Mia in the morning, then spend the rest of the day around Denham and the Shark Bay coastline.

Dolphins in shallow water at the beach on leg of Perth to Monkey Mia road trip itinerary

This slower day is useful before the longer drive to Coral Bay. Do not plan Francois Peron National Park in a standard 2WD campervan, as much of the park requires 4WD access.

Campervan tip: Refuel and reorganise the van this afternoon so tomorrow starts smoothly.

Day 6: Denham to Coral Bay

Around 555 km

Return to North West Coastal Highway and use Carnarvon for fuel, lunch, groceries and water.

Continue to Coral Bay and aim to arrive before dark. Once you have checked in, walk down to Bill’s Bay for a swim or sunset rather than trying to squeeze in a major activity.

Campervan tip: Carnarvon is the practical place to restock before Ningaloo.

Day 7: Coral Bay and Ningaloo Reef

Mostly a local day; kilometres depend on your beach and tour plans

Leave the campervan parked and give Ningaloo a full day.

Snorkel from shore around Bill’s Bay and Paradise Beach, or book a marine tour. Depending on the season, you may be able to swim with whale sharks, while humpback whales are commonly seen from July to October and manta rays can be encountered around Coral Bay throughout the year.

Our Perth to Ningaloo Reef road trip goes deeper into reef stops and seasonal planning.

Campervan tip: If a wildlife tour matters to you, book ahead during the busier months.

Day 8: Coral Bay to Exmouth

Around 150 km

Enjoy a final morning swim before following the main sealed route to Exmouth.

Use the afternoon for supplies, the Ningaloo Aquarium and Discovery Centre or a coastal drive. Avoid tracks shown closer to the western coastline, as some require 4WD access.

Expert Insights From Jade Bell

Co-Founder and Operations Manager, Home on the Road

I think Coral Bay suits people who want to slow down and relax. You can snorkel straight from the shore, almost in the middle of town. Exmouth is better for travellers who want to explore a bit further, especially Cape Range National Park and that feeling of being out in nature.

Campervan tip: Fill your fuel and water before tomorrow’s Cape Range day.

Day 9: Cape Range National Park

Local driving: allow for the return trip from Exmouth to Cape Range

Start around Turquoise Bay, then choose one or two additional stops such as Oyster Stacks, Osprey Bay or Yardie Creek. These beaches are spread along the peninsula, so the return drive from Exmouth adds considerably more kilometres than the town-to-town route suggests.

Do not try to visit every beach. More time swimming and snorkelling at a few good locations makes for a better day than repeatedly packing up the van.

Our Perth to Exmouth road trip itinerary covers Cape Range in more detail.

Day 10: Exmouth to Karijini National Park

Around 670 km

This is one of the longest driving days of the trip, so leave early.

Take proper breaks, share the driving if possible and refuel when the opportunity makes sense. The scenery changes dramatically as you leave the coast and enter the Pilbara.

Home On The Road permits Karijini travel subject to its current rental conditions and applicable fees, so check these before departure.

Campervan tip: Do not plan a serious gorge walk after arriving. Set up, eat and prepare for tomorrow.

Day 11: Karijini National Park

Local driving between the campground and gorge access points

Give Dales Gorge a proper day. Start at Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool, then decide whether to spend more time on the Dales Gorge walk or enjoy the lookouts. You no longer have to squeeze the whole park into one day.

Start early and choose walks that suit your fitness and the conditions. Trails range from short lookout paths to steep, rocky gorge walks. Check DBCA park alerts and the forecast before setting out, especially during periods of heat or rain.

Campervan tip: Stay in the Karijini area again tonight. The gorges are spread out, and exploring from one base avoids packing up the van between stops.

Day 12: More Time in Karijini National Park

Local driving between the western gorges and lookouts

Spend a second full day exploring another part of Karijini, such as the Weano Gorge area, Joffre Gorge or nearby lookouts. This gives you time to enjoy the park without rushing through long walks immediately before or after a big highway drive.

Some gorge walks involve steep rock sections or water, so choose routes to match your experience. Several main visitor areas now have sealed-road access, but other detours are unsealed. Check current access, weather and Home On The Road rental conditions before choosing your route.

Expert Insights From Jade Bell

Co-Founder and Operations Manager, Home on the Road

We’ve had customers book two weeks and then ask to extend their trip. Karijini is often a highlight. When our bookings allow, we can sometimes extend a hire by up to a week, but it’s always better to allow enough time from the start.

Campervan tip: Refuel and stock up before this part of the trip, and prepare for an early start tomorrow. The distance between the park’s attractions can add up quickly.

Day 13: Karijini to Eighty Mile Beach via Port Hedland

Around 600–700 km, depending on your campsite and route

This is a long driving day, so leave Karijini early and keep sightseeing stops to a minimum. Travel towards Port Hedland and use it as a practical stop for fuel, groceries, drinking water and a proper rest before continuing north.

Continue to Eighty Mile Beach only if you have enough daylight and feel rested. The aim is to finish at the beach campground, rather than spend a separate night in Port Hedland, so you can keep your second full day in Karijini within the 14-day plan.

Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park is reached via a 10 km unsealed gravel road. Check its current condition, your booking and the campervan rental terms. This is a demanding driving day after two full days exploring Karijini. For a more manageable pace, we recommend the 15-day itinerary with a night in Port Hedland.

Day 14: Eighty Mile Beach to Broome

Around 375 km, plus local driving in Broome

The final leg takes you north into Broome.

Aim to arrive with enough time to settle in and watch the sunset at Cable Beach. The 14-day itinerary finishes on arrival in Broome, so add at least one further day if you want to explore Gantheaume Point, Chinatown and the town’s pearling history.

Campervan tip: If the rental ends in Broome, confirm the one-way return arrangements well before this final day.

We recently had a customer drive one of our campervans to Broome on a 13-day booking in September. We arranged for a car carrier to collect it from the rental depot and return it to Perth, which took around two to three days.

Better-Paced 15-Day Perth to Broome Itinerary

For most travellers, we recommend 15 days rather than 14. You still follow Days 1 to 12 above, including two full days exploring Karijini and three nights in the park. The extra day simply splits the long journey from Karijini to Eighty Mile Beach into two more manageable drives.

2–3 Seater Toyota HiAce Campervan Hire Perth

In the 14-day itinerary, Day 13 combines Karijini, a supply stop in Port Hedland and Eighty Mile Beach into one 600–700 km day. In the 15-day version, you stay overnight in Port Hedland before continuing north. Nothing needs to be removed from Kalbarri, Ningaloo or Karijini.

Day Drive Approx. distance Overnight
1 Perth to Geraldton 420 km Geraldton
2 Geraldton to Kalbarri 155 km Kalbarri
3 Kalbarri National Park Local driving Kalbarri
4 Kalbarri to Denham 375 km Denham
5 Shark Bay and Monkey Mia Local driving Denham
6 Denham to Coral Bay 555 km Coral Bay
7 Coral Bay and Ningaloo Reef Local day Coral Bay
8 Coral Bay to Exmouth 150 km Exmouth
9 Cape Range National Park Local driving Exmouth/Cape Range
10 Exmouth to Karijini National Park 670 km Karijini
11 Karijini National Park Local driving Karijini
12 More Time in Karijini National Park Local driving Karijini
13 Karijini to Port Hedland. Refuel, restock and relax rather than continuing north. Around 340 km Port Hedland
14 Port Hedland to Eighty Mile Beach. Settle into the coastal campground with more of the afternoon free. Around 255 km Eighty Mile Beach
15 Eighty Mile Beach to Broome. Aim to arrive with time for Cable Beach. Around 375 km Broome

What changes?

  • Only the final three days change.
  • Port Hedland becomes an overnight stop instead of a quick supply stop.
  • Eighty Mile Beach moves from Day 13 to Day 14.
  • You reach Broome on Day 15.
  • The total route distance is broadly the same, and you should still budget approximately 4,000 to 5,000 km including local driving.
  • Neither itinerary includes a full sightseeing day in Broome, so consider another night if you want time to explore the town.

Route Planning Insight From Share Bus

Feedback from a campervan road-trip operator that tracks trip kilometres

We track the kilometres closely and see around 5,000 km for a very similar route. Local driving around the attractions in Kalbarri, Karijini and Cape Range National Park adds a lot. I’d allow at least 4,000 km, possibly 5,000 km. It’s a lot of driving to reach Karijini for only one day, so we’d give it more time.

If you must finish in 14 days but would rather break up the drive north of Karijini, another option is to drive directly from Perth to Kalbarri on Day 1, stopping around Geraldton on the way. That combines the first two driving days into roughly 575 km and frees a night for Port Hedland later. However, it creates a very long first day, so the 15-day version is still the better-paced choice.

Where to Stay Between Perth and Broome

Location Suggested style Why stay here
Geraldton Caravan park Major first-night supply stop
Kalbarri River or town campground Access to coast and national park
Denham Caravan park Best base for Shark Bay and Monkey Mia
Coral Bay Caravan park Walkable access to Ningaloo
Exmouth/Cape Range Town or national park camp Reef and Cape Range access
Karijini National park or nearby campground Three nights to explore the eastern and western gorges
Port Hedland (optional) Caravan park Overnight break for the 15-day option
Eighty Mile Beach Coastal campground Beach camp after the long drive from Karijini
Broome Caravan park Base for Cable Beach and Broome

Book well ahead around Ningaloo, Karijini, Eighty Mile Beach and Broome during the dry season. Port Hedland is an optional overnight stop if you choose the 15-day version.

Can You Drive Perth to Broome in a 2WD Campervan?

Yes. The main sealed route between Perth and Broome can be completed in a 2WD campervan.

Suitable for a 2WD campervan

  • Main sealed route between Perth and Broome
  • Major towns and supply stops along the itinerary
  • Sealed access roads to visitor areas when open

Off limits

  • Beaches and soft sand
  • Signed 4WD tracks
  • Flooded or closed roads
  • Any track outside your rental conditions
The important difference is between completing the route and accessing every side trip. Avoid beaches, soft sand, signed 4WD tracks, flooded roads and any route outside your rental conditions.

Karijini includes unsealed roads, and Eighty Mile Beach accommodation may involve unsealed access. Check current conditions before travelling and ask Home On The Road when you are unsure about a planned detour.

Best Time for a Perth to Broome Road Trip

Period What to expect Our view
March-April Warmer north, start of whale shark season Possible, but check heat and weather
May-June Cooler inland weather, dry season beginning Excellent
July-August Dry Broome weather, cooler Pilbara, busy camps Excellent but busiest
September-October Warmer weather, humpbacks around Ningaloo Good, but heat increases
November-February Very hot north, wet-season risks Not our preferred period

May to September gives the best overall balance for the complete route. If Ningaloo wildlife is the priority, choose your dates around the species you most want to see.

We get Perth-to-Broome enquiries throughout April to September. If someone enquires for a trip after October, I’d want to call them to make sure they know it isn’t usually the ideal time and check whether flooding could affect the roads around Broome.

The flies can really surprise people as they head north, so a fly net is a good purchase. And always make sure you’re carrying enough water. It can get quite hot up there, even in winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Perth to Broome by road?
The most direct sealed route is roughly 2,200 kilometres. The overnight-to-overnight driving in this itinerary is about 3,300 kilometres, but sightseeing in Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Cape Range and Karijini adds substantially more. Allow approximately 4,000 to 5,000 kilometres for the full campervan trip.
How long does it take to drive from Perth to Broome?
Driving directly takes roughly 23 to 25 hours before substantial breaks. For a road trip that includes Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Ningaloo and two days exploring Karijini, allow at least 14 days. A 15-day itinerary lets you break up one of the longest drives.
How many days do you need for a Perth to Broome road trip?
Fourteen days is the minimum for this full route, including two full days in Karijini, but it involves two lengthy travel days in the Pilbara. Fifteen days allows a Port Hedland overnight between Karijini and Eighty Mile Beach. Sixteen to 21 days is more comfortable for extra reef time, walks and Broome sightseeing.
What are the best stops between Perth and Broome?
Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Coral Bay, Exmouth, Cape Range National Park, Karijini National Park and Eighty Mile Beach are the main experience-led stops. Geraldton and Carnarvon are useful places to stock up, while Port Hedland can be a supply stop or an overnight break.
Do you need a 4WD to drive from Perth to Broome?
No. The main route can be completed in a 2WD vehicle. You will need to skip beaches, signed 4WD tracks and some remote national park areas.
Can you visit Karijini in a 2WD campervan?
Many of Karijini’s main visitor areas can be reached by 2WD in suitable conditions, although some roads are unsealed. Check road conditions, park alerts and your rental agreement first.
Is Coral Bay or Exmouth better?
They offer different experiences. Coral Bay is compact and provides easy shore access to Ningaloo Reef, while Exmouth gives you access to Cape Range National Park and more of the North West Cape. On a 14-day Perth to Broome trip, visiting both is worthwhile.
Can you drive from Exmouth to Karijini in one day?
Yes, but the drive is around 670 kilometres depending on where you stay. Leave early, take regular breaks and avoid planning a major hike after arrival. This itinerary gives you two full days to explore Karijini after that travel day.
Can you include two full days in Karijini on a 14-day itinerary?
Yes. This route allows Days 11 and 12 for Karijini by treating Port Hedland as a supply stop on Day 13 rather than an overnight stay. The trade-off is a long drive to Eighty Mile Beach. For a gentler pace, add a night in Port Hedland and make it 15 days.
What is the best month to drive from Perth to Broome?
June to August gives the strongest overall combination of Broome’s dry season and cooler Pilbara conditions. May and September are also good choices.
Can you hire a campervan in Perth and leave it in Broome?
Home On The Road occasionally arranges one-way campervan hire from Perth to Broome, including vehicle relocation back to Perth by car carrier. Availability and return logistics vary, so confirm the arrangement with the team before booking flights or accommodation.
