10-Day Perth to Ningaloo Reef Road Trip Itinerary
This itinerary gets you north efficiently so that Ningaloo remains the main event. Geraldton and Carnarvon break up the long drive, Coral Bay and Exmouth give you different ways to experience the reef, and Kalbarri adds something different to the return journey instead of repeating every stop in reverse.
Day 1: Perth to Geraldton
Leave Perth in the morning and follow the coast north. This is one of the longer driving days, but covering more ground at the beginning gives you more time around Ningaloo later.
Follow Indian Ocean Drive
Indian Ocean Drive takes you past coastal towns including Lancelin, Cervantes, Jurien Bay and Green Head.
You do not need to stop at all of them. Choose one or two places for coffee, lunch or a walk near the water and keep the day moving north.

Stop in Geraldton
Geraldton works well as a practical supply stop rather than somewhere you necessarily need to stay overnight. Pass through for fuel, groceries, water and other supplies before continuing north.
Walk along the foreshore or visit the HMAS Sydney II Memorial if you arrive with enough daylight, then stock the campervan for tomorrow’s longer drive into the Gascoyne.
Day 2: Geraldton to Carnarvon
Day two is another long drive, but the scenery changes noticeably as you leave the greener Mid West and enter the drier country around the Gascoyne.
Break Up the Drive
Take regular breaks rather than trying to cover the entire distance in one stretch.
North West Coastal Highway passes long sections with few towns, so top up fuel when it makes sense and avoid letting the tank run low simply because you expect another service station ahead.

Carnarvon is a useful break on this route, and the Fruit Loop gives you a more interesting way to spend the afternoon.

Day 3: Carnarvon to Coral Bay
Today is where the trip changes from travelling towards Ningaloo to actually experiencing it.
Carnarvon to Coral Bay takes only a few hours, leaving most of the afternoon free once you arrive.
Drive to Coral Bay
Continue north along North West Coastal Highway before turning towards Coral Bay.
The small settlement sits directly beside Ningaloo Marine Park and feels very different from the regional centres you have passed on the way north.
There are supplies, fuel, accommodation and tour operators, but choices are limited compared with Perth, Geraldton or Carnarvon.
Take Your First Ningaloo Snorkel
Once you have checked in, walk down to Bill’s Bay or Paradise Beach.
Coral Bay is one of the easiest places to experience Ningaloo because you can swim and snorkel directly from shore in sheltered water.
Keep the first afternoon simple. Go for a snorkel, walk along the beach and watch the sun drop over the Indian Ocean.
Do not follow recommendations for Five Finger Reef, Oyster Bridge or other remote beaches in a standard 2WD campervan. Those areas require suitable 4WD access.
Day 4: Explore Ningaloo Reef from Coral Bay
Leave the campervan parked for much of today and give Ningaloo Reef a full day.
Coral Bay suits travellers who want easy access to the water without constantly driving between beaches and attractions.
Choose Your Main Reef Experience
The best activity depends on when you travel.
Whale sharks are generally present from March to July, humpback whales from July to October and manta rays can be encountered around Coral Bay throughout the year.
A full-day wildlife tour can easily become the main activity of the day.
If you are travelling outside whale shark or humpback season, manta ray tours, diving, snorkelling cruises, glass-bottom boats and kayaking provide other ways to get beyond the shore.
Spend More Time Snorkelling from the Beach
You do not need to book a tour to enjoy Coral Bay.
Bill’s Bay and Paradise Beach give you another opportunity to snorkel over coral gardens directly from shore. The reef’s proximity to the coastline is one of the reasons Ningaloo feels so different from reef destinations that require a boat trip every time you want to get into the water.
Give yourself time for a slower afternoon rather than filling every hour with organised activities.
Day 5: Coral Bay to Exmouth
Coral Bay and Exmouth both provide access to Ningaloo, but they offer very different experiences.
Coral Bay is compact and beach-focused. Exmouth gives you access to the northern reef, Cape Range National Park and a much larger area to explore.
Enjoy One Last Coral Bay Morning
There is no need to leave at sunrise.
Have breakfast, take another swim or snorkel and then begin the short drive north.
Use the main sealed road between Coral Bay and Exmouth. Routes shown closer to the western coastline include 4WD sections and should not be treated as shortcuts for a standard campervan.
Settle into Exmouth
Use the afternoon to organise supplies and get your bearings.
You can visit the Ningaloo Aquarium and Discovery Centre, head towards Bundegi Beach or drive towards Vlamingh Head for coastal views.
Tomorrow is your main Cape Range day, so refill drinking water, prepare food and check current national park information before leaving town.

Day 6: Turquoise Bay and Cape Range National Park
Today is the main Ningaloo day from Exmouth.
Cape Range National Park runs beside Ningaloo Marine Park, letting you move between white beaches, coral reef, limestone ranges and Yardie Creek without covering huge distances.
Start Around Turquoise Bay
Turquoise Bay is one of Ningaloo’s best-known shore snorkelling sites.
The calmer section of the bay suits travellers who simply want to swim and snorkel, while the drift area uses the natural current to carry experienced swimmers along the beach.
Do not assume the drift is always gentle. Strong currents can occur and DBCA advises swimmers to assess conditions from shore and stay close to the beach when unsure. Never snorkel alone.
Check the Tide at Oyster Stacks
Oyster Stacks provides another shore snorkelling option, with coral close to the beach.
It should only be snorkelled around high tide, with DBCA recommending a minimum water level of 1.2 metres over the reef. Check tide conditions at Milyering Discovery Centre before entering the water.
If the timing does not work, skip it rather than forcing another stop into the day.
Continue to Osprey Bay and Yardie Creek
Osprey Bay is useful for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking or simply having lunch beside the coast.
Continue south towards Yardie Creek for a final change of scenery.
The gorge cuts through Cape Range towards the coast and provides an easy place to finish the day before returning towards your campsite or Exmouth.
Day 7: Exmouth to Carnarvon
There is no need to rush away from Exmouth. Spend as much of the morning around Ningaloo as you can before beginning the drive south.
This is intentionally a lighter day after several days around the reef.
Enjoy a Final Ningaloo Morning
Use the morning for breakfast in town, one last coastal stop or some extra time around the reef.
If you have not yet booked a major marine tour from Exmouth, you could make today another full Ningaloo day and move the southbound drive to the following morning.
Avoid trying to squeeze a full-day whale shark tour and a 365-kilometre drive into the same day.
Choose How Far South to Drive
For the standard itinerary, follow the main sealed route south towards Carnarvon. If you want to maximise your time in Exmouth, Minilya Bridge is a free-camp option south of Coral Bay that lets you stop earlier.
Stopping at Minilya Bridge means a shorter drive today but a longer run to Kalbarri tomorrow. Otherwise, continue to Carnarvon and arrive with enough daylight to organise the van.
If you continue to Carnarvon, refill water and food supplies before settling in.

Day 8: Carnarvon to Kalbarri
Today takes you south from the Gascoyne towards the Murchison River and the red coastal cliffs around Kalbarri.
It is a long drive, so make Kalbarri’s coastal attractions your priority rather than trying to reach the inland gorges as well.
Break Up the Drive South
Leave Carnarvon in the morning and take regular breaks along North West Coastal Highway.
This section is more about the changing scenery and open road than a long list of attractions.
Continue towards Northampton and Kalbarri once you have refuelled and stretched your legs.
Explore Kalbarri’s Coastal Cliffs
The southern approach to Kalbarri passes several coastal lookouts before you reach town.
Choose two or three rather than stopping at every sign.
Natural Bridge and Island Rock work well together, while Red Bluff gives you another view across the coast closer to town.

Day 9: Kalbarri to Cervantes via the Inland Gorges
Start early today so you can experience the inland side of Kalbarri before beginning the journey towards Cervantes.
Visit Nature’s Window and the Skywalk
Drive into Kalbarri National Park in the morning.
Nature’s Window is reached by a short walk from the car park and frames the Murchison River gorge through a natural opening in the sandstone.
Continue to Kalbarri Skywalk, where two cantilevered platforms extend above the gorge.
On this itinerary, skip the full Loop Trail. It deserves several hours and is better suited to a dedicated Kalbarri day rather than the beginning of another long drive.
Continue South
Leave Kalbarri after your national park visit and follow the coast south.
Stop around Geraldton for fuel, food and water, then continue through smaller Mid West towns towards Cervantes.
Staying near Cervantes leaves you close to Nambung National Park for the final morning.
Day 10: Cervantes to Perth via the Pinnacles
The final day is deliberately easy.
After several thousand kilometres on the road, you can enjoy one last major stop without turning the campervan return into a rushed finish.
Explore the Pinnacles
Drive into Nambung National Park and visit the Pinnacles Desert.
Thousands of limestone formations rise from the yellow sand, with a marked driving route allowing you to move through the main area and park at designated places to explore on foot.
Early morning can be particularly comfortable before the day becomes warmer and busier.
Return to Perth
Continue south along Indian Ocean Drive towards Perth.
Leave enough time to refuel, remove your belongings and complete any required cleaning before returning the campervan.

An extra two or three days gives you considerably more flexibility.
You could spend another day around Coral Bay, add another Cape Range day or extend the return through Shark Bay and Monkey Mia.

Camping in Cape Range National Park
Cape Range has several bookable campgrounds including Osprey Bay, Yardie Creek, Kurrajong, Neds and Mesa. If these are all booked up, Yardie Creek Homestead sits just outside the park and offers a proper caravan park with more facilities, although it is also more expensive.
Facilities are basic and sites are unpowered. Bookings are essential at many campgrounds, particularly during busy periods.
Some camps south of Yardie Creek are 4WD-only, so check access carefully rather than assuming every Ningaloo campground suits your campervan.
